A MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTION

As part of a major sewer separation project in Hjallerup, Denmark, Brønderslev Municipality decided to replace the existing road bridge. The old bridge had reached the end of its lifespan, and since the entire town was already being dug up, it was the perfect opportunity to establish a new structure that could meet today’s requirements for functionality, durability, and cost-efficiency.

The solution was a modern bridge in Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), combining efficient execution with a slim architectural design. The result is a structure that not only carries traffic safely across the river in Hjallerup, but also adds a light and elegant expression to the local infrastructure, designed to last for more than a century.

WHY UHPC WAS CHOSEN

In bridge projects, installation and maintenance often pose challenges - especially when budget and schedule must align. UHPC provides a solution to all these demands. The material makes it possible to produce large prefabricated elements that are both slim and extremely strong.

For the client, this meant a structure with low operating costs, as a UHPC bridge deck is maintenance-free and does not require a membrane. At the same time, the bridge is delivered at a competitive price with a lifespan of more than 100 years, making UHPC an economically attractive choice when considering total cost of ownership.

One of the greatest advantages is the fast installation. For Hjallerup Bridge, a total of 11 bridge elements and 7 side elements were produced and installed in just a single day. This short installation period minimized disruption for both traffic and residents while also reducing overall construction costs. Where alternative methods often require weeks on-site, Hjallerup Bridge was ready to carry traffic quickly, without compromising quality or safety.
