Catharinabrug in Leiden, the Netherlands, wins the European Concrete Award 2018 in the category ‘Civil Engineering’. The project was carried out for the city of Leiden by a team consisting of DP6 Architectuurstudio, Gebr. Schouls and Pieters Bouwtechniek in close collaboration with Hi-Con A/S. The bridge decks and bridge piers are made of prefabricated elements in Hi-Cons CRC i3® UHPC concrete, which has been specifically developed for larger structures in a marine environment.
The elegant bridge has a minimalist and organic design and is very slim in relation to the span (1:81 in slenderness index) - a slenderness that was necessary i.a. due to requirements for free clearence hight under the bridge, which was only possible due to Hi-Cons CRC i3® concept.
Hi-Con has contributed specialist knowledge in both design, calculations and assembly strategy and execution, as well as delivered the complex bridge elements and JointCast material for casting - to realize the demanding project.
Congratulations on the award to the whole team and for creating this beautiful bridge in the center of Leiden.
