A COMPREHENSIVE RENOVATION OF 270 HOMES

in Herning, dENMARK, FællesBo has carried out an extensive renovation of Section 24, which consists of 11 residential blocks built in 1967. The project is part of a larger master plan aimed at future-proofing the homes and creating better living conditions for residents - both indoors and outdoors.

A total of 270 homes have undergone a comprehensive upgrade. The renovation was driven in part by challenges with thermal bridges and poor indoor climate in the existing buildings, making it necessary to modernize the structures and improve comfort for residents.

As part of the renovation, new balconies were also required to provide residents with functional outdoor spaces while supporting the architectural upgrade of the buildings. Hi-Con was therefore engaged to develop and deliver a balcony solution in Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), combining slender design with high durability and minimal maintenance.

HI-CON’S BALCONY SOLUTION

For the project, Hi-Con delivered 249 balconies (145 elements) in Ultra High Performance Concrete - a material that combines high strength, long service life, and the ability to create slender elements. In addition, approximately 180 columns were supplied to support the balconies.

In a renovation of this scale, weight, dimensions, and durability are critical parameters. UHPC makes it possible to create balconies with slender profiles and high load-bearing capacity while keeping the load on the existing structure to a minimum. This is a significant advantage in renovation projects where new elements must be integrated into existing buildings.

The balconies provide residents with new, functional outdoor spaces while enhancing the architectural expression of the façades. The prefabricated UHPC elements ensure high quality and a consistent finish, while also enabling an efficient installation process on site.

The material’s dense structure and high strength also mean that the balconies have an expected service life of more than 100 years without structural maintenance. This provides the client with a robust and reliable solution that supports the long-term future-proofing of the residential area.
