A COMPREHENSIVE RENOVATION

Mindeparken in Herning, Denmark, was originally built in 1961. Over the years, the characteristic residential blocks began to show clear signs of wear. Issues with moisture and cold, along with a generally worn appearance, made it clear that the area required a thorough renovation. The goal was not only to upgrade the homes to modern standards, but also to preserve and strengthen the sense of community in the area.

The project includes the renovation of 210 homes as well as the upgrade of the outdoor common areas. There was a need for solutions that could improve everyday life for residents by providing safe, durable and functional outdoor spaces, while also elevating the buildings architecturally and technically to meet today’s standards for comfort and robustness.

As part of the renovation of the first three blocks, the existing balconies needed to be replaced with new, modern solutions. Hi-Con was therefore brought in to develop and deliver a balcony solution in Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) that could meet both the technical and architectural ambitions of the project.

HI-CON’S BALCONY SOLUTION

To meet the requirements for quality, functionality and aesthetics, Hi-Con delivered prefabricated elements in ultra high performance concrete. The material combines high strength, slender profiles and long durability.

The delivery to Mindeparken includes 33 double balconies (approx. 2 × 7.2 m), 18 single balconies (approx. 2 × 3.6 m) and 9 identical gable balconies. In addition, we delivered 68 wall elements with a thickness of 80 mm and 32 canopies for the entrance areas.

The new balconies are designed to respect the original architecture while adding a contemporary expression to the façades.

The high strength of UHPC has made it possible to create slender balcony profiles with minimal load on the existing structure - a key advantage in renovation projects. At the same time, the material’s dense and robust structure ensures a long service life with no structural maintenance, supporting a stable and reliable solution for residents for many years to come.
